LYNCHING IN AMERICA: Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), proudly presents a seminar and lecture on the the history of the lynchings of African Americans in the twelve states in the United States of America that had the most lynchings: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. The study is concerned with the years between 1877 and 1950. A short film on the origin of the song "Strange Fruit" will be shown first, followed by the Seminar.

The four lynchings that occurred in Pinellas County will be discussed by Historian Jon Wilson, Dr. Julie Armstrong, USFSP Professor, will discuss her book: "Mary Turner and the Memory of Lynching." Limited copies will be available for purchase. Members of ASALH will discuss the Equal Justice Initiative Report. Dr. Ronald Sheehy, will lead the Question and Answer session following the presentation. Refreshments will be
served. The public is invited to attend.

Police Civilian Oversight One-Day Training

NACOLE training brings together citizens involved in neighborhood groups, civic associations, crime watch, law enforcement, students, civilian oversight practitioners, community service organizations and others. 

Discussion topics include the different types of oversight, what tools help to make the work you do effective and how to navigate the politics surrounding civilian oversight of law enforcement. This one-day training is open to all but will focus on topics most relevant to those who are new to NACOLE training and interested in furthering the practice of civilian oversight in Florida and throughout the Southeast.
