The Tampa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DSTTA) hosts its 5th Annual Youth Art Exhibit Saturday, January 31, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the University Area Community Center. DSTTA encourages young artists in their study of art through the exhibition of their work. The students’ work will be on display for a silent auction. Bids generated from each art piece goes directly to the student. Pieces that students may not want to sell will have a donation box next to it. The donations will go to the student. This year’s participants are from Blake High School, King High School, Roland Park K-8 Magnet School for International Studies, Steinbrenner High School, Wharton High School and Williams Middle Magnet School. Song, poetry and dance will be performed during the art viewing. This mission of this art exhibit falls under the sorority's National Arts and Letters Commission established in 1973 by Past National President Lillian Benbow. The mission of the Arts and Letters Commission began as a process for understanding and projecting the works of black women in the arts to cherish their labor and their lives. Since its inception in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta has maintained a commitment to literature and the creative and performing arts.

This year’s topic is “A Vision of Equality,” a stimulating panel discussion about W.E.B. DuBois’s 1903 vision of creating an aristocracy of leaders among the most able 10 percent of black Americans through higher education and involvement in social change. What has been the impact of his vision through the decades, and how has life changed for African Americans in the past 112 years? Panelists and guests alike will be asked to consider and weigh in: Is DuBois’s concept of "The Talented Tenth" still relevant? 

Panelists are: Vivian R. Johnson, Ed.D., best-selling author, retired educator and expert in family/school/community partnerships; Neil P. Phillips, Principal, Visible Men Academy, a charter school for African American boys in Manatee County; Charles Smith, playwright and Distinguished Professor of theater and playwriting, Ohio University; and Dr. Bernard Watson, Academic Vice President, Temple University, and President, William Penn Foundation.
