Wesley Snipes Is Going Jail

A federal appeals court has denied actor Wesley Snipes' claim that his three-year prison sentence for tax evasion was "unreasonable."

A panel of judges in the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals upheld Snipes' 2008 sentencing on three misdemeanor counts of failing to file tax returns.  Read more at cnn.com.

Selection vs. Election: The attack on Alvin Greene

Like many others I voted for Democratic senatorial nominee Alvin Greene. It was conscious decision. I voted for him out of protest of the Democratic Party’s retreat on a variety of local, state and national issues that I support. I knew nothing about Greene. I didn’t know that much more about Vic Rawls, his primary opposition, except that he was the party’s chosen "sacrificial lamb" to go up against Republican incumbent Senator Jim DeMint. For me, Rawls being the choice of the party elites tipped the scale in Greene’s favor.  Read more at scblacknews.com.

NAACP: Minorities assigned tougher oil spill jobs

The NAACP has sent a letter to BP expressing concerns that minorities helping to clean up after the massive oil spill tend to be assigned tougher, lower paying jobs than whites.

NAACP president, Ben Jealous, says in the letter dated Friday that he wants to meet with BP’s chief executive officer. E-mail messages left with several BP spokespeople were not immediately returned.  Read more at blackpoliticsontheweb.com.

Jackson rips Gilbert’s LeBron comments, says owner sees James as a ‘runaway slave’

Jesse Jackson criticized Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert on Sunday, saying Gilbert sees LeBron James as a “runaway slave” and that the owner’s comments after the free-agent forward decided to join the Miami Heat put the player in danger.

Comcast commits $20 mil to fund for minority-owned new media ventures

As federal regulators mull its proposed joint venture with NBC Universal, Comcast said it will commit at least $20 million to a fund for minority-owned new media ventures when the deal closes.

While the media gears up to cover the verdict in the trial of former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle, charged with killing 22-year old Oscar Grant last year, there are those who believe reporters may be contributing to whatever violence might take place.
