SUMMER CAMP OFFERS YOUTH READING INTRUCTION AND ARTS EDUCATION.

According to the Massachusetts-based Schott Foundation for Public Education, just 21 percent of African American males in Pinellas County earned regular diplomas in 2008. “We must find more creative avenues to explore,” says Rodney Russ, an english and drama teacher currently employed by Pinellas County Schools as a substitute teacher. This summer Russ, along with The Old Landmark Christian Academy, located at 4201 6th Street South St. Petersburg, will offer the K-12 students a unique summer camp, one which offers reading instruction in the mornings and dramatic arts in the afternoons. According to Russ, the morning reading program will offer a highly organized, teacher directed approach to reading instruction that pays close, personal attention to reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension skills. For beginning readers, phonics instruction will be used to build reading readiness skills. According to Russ, the reading program will employ proven methods to address the specific needs of problem readers who are reading below grade level. “We must develop in each child an appreciation for education, specifically reading. If a child can read fluently, he can be successful. If he cannot, his lack of skills and personal shame will hinder his educational development.” Through drama education, the camp hopes to unlock hidden potentials, while teaching students cooperation and collaboration. Moreover, there will also be enrichment activities, workshops, and field trips throughout the summer. The camp provides financial assistance to eligible families. Call for specific guidelines.
